Dürer’s father at seventy, my all-time favourite portrait.
See the lighted face;it is the focus of the painting (the rest is sketched); the well-known crossed eyes’ trick makes you feel the character is looking at you when you are passing by.
But it is so intelligently done that one perceives vivid interiority . And look at the warm, brilliant colours! Such contrast to the worn, serious expression.
One forgets the character lived in the 15th century, he could be your neighbour.
Dürer painted incarnated life itself.
