This wonderful blue was painted with lapis-lazuli, one of the most expensive pigments at Jan Van Eyck’s time (1430,’L’homme au chaperon bleu’, also called ‘Man with a Ring’; he is supposed to be Jean IV of Brabant with a ring for his bethroted ).

I found this image (and information)on the newspaper this morning (Guy Duplat,La Libre Belgique,12/13 septembre,p.54), and was immediately captivated by the colour.

It is part of the Brukenthal collection (Sibiu, Romania),now exhibited in Paris (Museum Jacquemart-Andre).
