Rafael Wardi

The dark old figure with an expressive although blurred face almost fills the half of this pastel scene; a larger volume is entirely occupied by the bed surrounded by flickering luminous colours: the lady’s only future.
I like to imagine that the thin entangled lines that create this flickering of light are all the lost threads of this lonely woman’s life.

Rafael Wardi, Helsinki 1928, ‘Alone’, pastel 1999.
