MESSERSCHMIDT, Franz Xaver Biography , Austrian Paint Art, Gallery Art ,Painters

After an academic career, Franz Xaver Messerschmidt (Austria 1736-1783) made a serie of these astonishing portraits. I forgot where I read he was suffering from saturnism ( several of his sculptures are made of lead), but I find them very “modern”, not unlike Daumier’s satirical figurines .

Messerschmidt,’The Beaked’, 1770.

Daumier (France, 1808-1879), one of the famous 36 busts (clay, oil) representing politicians exposed in the Orsay Museum, Paris.
