Gilberte Dumont 1910-89,Belgium.
The shock of modernity (the sweater, hairstyle, make-up) and her classical, meticulous style fascinates me.
The artist used the Flemish masters’ presentation and technique. The background landscape depicts her city of Charleroi, a former rich industrial centre (coal mines; see also her elaborated ancient style black pendant : that region is called “Black Country”).
Magical anachronism. Self as an out of time, iconic mask.
Self-portrait, 1949. This painting was part of an exhibition called “Peindre l’esprit des choses” (painting the spirit of things) in Charleroi Museum (Belgium), 2010-11.
